AES collectors incorporate state of the art selectively coated absorber technology with an absorption of 98% and emissivity of only 7%. The light weight glazing with 90% transmission and 13% emission completes the almost unbeatable efficiency of the AES collectors. At 20 kilos for 2.2 square metres, the fitting of collectors is quite simple.

Independent tests carried out by the Department of Trade and Industry place the AES collectors in the top three performers.

Collectors have a life expectancy of 30 years and systems that were installed 29 years ago still perform as well as new. During the summer and shoulder months a properly installed AES system provides most of the hot water demand and most households turn off the boilers for about 8 months of the year. During the remaining period the AES solar system provides a significant contribution; in the middle of winter temperatures of 28 degrees C are quite common.

AES COLLECTORS DO NOT REQUIRE SUNSHINE. EVEN DIFFUSE LIGHT ON CLOUDY DAYS PROVIDES USEFUL HEAT TO THE SYSTEM.

A typical system for a household of 3 to 4 persons comprises a 3.3 square metre collector with a 180-litre cylinder.

The AES collectors are flexible in size catering for systems that require non-standard appearances.

AES offers system design and manufacture of commercial applications such as hotels, offices, apartment blocks, factories etc.

Complex microbial communities are the functional components in many important waste treatment and green energy technologies, such as anaerobic digestors, bioremediation, methanogenic bioreactors and microbial fuel cells. Due to the advent of high-throughput techniques, we are beginning to understand the complex diversity and activities in these communities, but engineering for improved performance based on these data is an incredibly difficult task due to the sheer volume of information. Also, the focal point for engineering is unclear, as determining the key species is not straightforward (e.g. fermenters, not methanogens, control methane production rates in methanogenic reactors).

An alternative technique for optimising a microbial community for a particular function involves top-down selective "breeding" of the community without a detailed knowledge of its constituents. This is called "Artificial Ecosystem Selection" (AES), and has been demonstrated to increase the efficiency of a microbial community in degrading the environmental pollutant 3-chloroaniline. Multiple replicate bioreactors are set up, and their efficiency in degradation measured. The most efficient communities are then used to inoculate a subsequent generation, and the process is repeated for 20-30 generations.

We are now seeking commercial partners with interests in microbially-driven processes to conduct further trials involving selection for a difficult-to-optimise microbial function. Via a collaboration with Dr. Chris Quince (University of Glasgow), we intend to study the resulting optimised communities via high-throughput DNA sequencing, which will give us an understanding of the community rearrangements involved in optimisation. This would then allow further rational changes to the community and the optimisation process.

Offer solutions to water treatment issues built around our platform Advanced Treatment Station (ATS) water filtration technology. This was developed with for use in Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS). The ATS is also used for recycling of road gully waste in our Treatment and Recycling Plant (TARP). Water is recycled to wash and fill the gully trucks giving >95% recycling and reducing landfilling.
